Magnox had a number of settling tanks at Hinkley Point containing intermediate level nuclear waste. As these tanks had reached the end of their life the waste was required to be removed from the tanks and stored in Ductile Cast Iron Containers within a purpose made Filling House and Buffer Store.
The project was procured using the existing Magnox ISF Framework and was to Design and Build the Buffer Store which provides a storage area for 40 Ductile Cast Iron Containers (DCIC’s) in the main bay and a maintenance bay along side.
Due to the location of the building within the Radiological Controlled area, design considerations had to be taken to minimise exposure to site personnel. Site surveying was done by Lidar point survey to minimise surveying time onsite in the design phase.
The building was constructed off a raft slab, which was built on an existing apron slab to avoid breaking into the existing concrete apron, which could have contained contaminated materials.
Working in partnership with Magnox from an early stage on the Buffer Store and Filling House enabled us to gain a clear understanding of Magnox’s objectives at the project levels and enabled us to provide complex design solutions and construct the buildings onsite under time pressures.

Challenges and solutions
Working on a live decommissioning power plant meant that following the Magnox operational procedures as well as those of Interserve was of paramount importance. Due to the high level of quality control procedures we have at Tilbury Douglas the company alignment of the two systems was very successful.
Added value
Magnox was very proud of the site safety record going over six years without a lost time injury and we are proud to say that we could contribute to this impressive record.
The project was completed on time and on budget to the client’s satisfaction.
