Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust identified the need for trauma theatre upgrades as part of their Winter Pressures Works, the Covid-19 pandemic also contributed to this assessment.
Owing to our previous experience of successfully completing projects for the Walsall Manor Hospital estates team, Tilbury Douglas was directly awarded this project as part of the P22 Framework.
After a short preconstruction period of just 12 weeks, we began construction to Theatres 5 and 6, one of which had to be kept functional throughout, so the Trust would have at least one operational trauma theatre.
The project included the strip out and full refurbishment of two ultra clean theatres including installation of new AHUs, trunking and pendants to house the medi-gas and power for the theatre. This also included the full replacement of theatre mechanical and electrical (M&E) plant room on the first floor.

Challenges and solutions
Theatre 5 had a construction period of 13 weeks, during which we discovered the need for additional surveys, ductwork and fire stopping works were required. This added three weeks onto the proposed programme, however by using our lessons learnt on Theatre 6, we were able to keep the programme down to just eight weeks and handed over within programme, before Christmas 2021, thus enabling the Trust to use the theatres to ease winter pressures as planned.
The new updated modern medical equipment required to be installed by the Trust was larger than the old equipment. We worked collaboratively with our sister Mechanical and Electrical company, Tilbury Douglas Engineering (TDE) and M&E subcontractors, to ensure the design allowed medical standards to be met, whilst fitting everything into the existing space. The team worked out of hours to determine the capacity of existing services and to ensure they would support the new equipment.
