Tilbury Douglas achieves major milestone in transforming Wirral’s Urgent and Emergency Care Facility

Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out business, has handed over the latest phase of Arrowe Park Hospital’s multi-million pound urgent and emergency care facility, with an advanced resuscitation area. This marks a significant milestone for the Wirral University Teaching Hospital project, as it is the first clinical section to be opened.

Strategically located near the ambulance entrance for rapid patient transfer, the resuscitation area includes eight specialised rooms designed to meet both patient and clinical needs. Additionally, a new staff floor has been built, providing urgent and emergency care teams with a dedicated entrance, workspace, and wellbeing area.

The design maximises natural light, minimises energy consumption, and optimises thermal comfort to meet BREEAM standards.

“It’s not just about what we build; it’s about how we build it. The construction delivery blends seamlessly with sustainable practices, by tapping into on-site renewable energy sources and embracing low or zero carbon technologies. Being involved in this significant investment is an honour for our team. They have pioneered innovative healthcare initiatives through partnerships with Cradle, supporting those affected by pregnancy loss, and DKMS, a cancer charity. In a remarkable collaboration, the team has hosted large-scale stem cell swabbing events, uniting hospital staff, patients, and visitors to find matches for blood cancer patients.”

Martin Horne, Divisional Director at Tilbury Douglas

The new development is the largest undertaken at Arrowe Park Hospital since its construction in 1982. Clinical staff have been closely involved in shaping the facility and there is ongoing consultation with the public throughout the work.

“As a leading provider in UK healthcare construction, we recognise the significance of partnering with the Trust on the most critical investment at Arrowe Park Hospital in over 40 years. This transformative project will deliver Wirral’s only emergency department, greatly enhancing urgent care for our community. We are pleased to hand over this phase, a testament to the teamwork and shared commitment to providing the best possible patient care.”
