Tilbury Douglas appointed to deliver detailed design stage for Halifax Leisure Centre
Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out business, has been appointed by Calderdale Council to deliver the next phase of the new Halifax Leisure Centre project.
Following a competitive tender process, Tilbury Douglas will now progress the detailed design, costings and construction programme for the new facility, which is being developed on the North Bridge site in Halifax town centre.
This appointment represents a key milestone in the project. The new centre will provide modern, inclusive and energy-efficient facilities that promote health and wellbeing, support community integration and contribute to Calderdale’s Climate Action Plan.
Key features will include:
- A six-lane main swimming pool with spectator seating and a learner pool
- Refurbished eight-court sports hall
- 120-station fitness suite, multi-functional studios and dedicated cycling studio
- Soft play area, café and community space
- Wet changing village, changing places facility and separate dry change rooms
- Sustainable technologies including air source heat pumps
Tilbury Douglas is also collaborating with the council to explore early site works to accelerate the construction timeline. These early works would involve demolition and preparatory activities at the existing North Bridge Leisure Centre.
Calderdale Council’s Leader, Cllr Jane Scullion, said: “We know that people are eager to enjoy the new leisure centre in Halifax and we’re working hard to make sure that the modern and centrally located facility provides great opportunities for everyone to be more active, more often.
“We’re ambitious about the project, and we have to make sure that it is financially viable and can be delivered successfully. We’ve secured government funding of over £12million to support the project and continue to seek additional external funding opportunities.
“The appointment of a contractor for the detailed design work will enable us to have a clearer picture of what the centre will look like and how and when it will be delivered. We’re excited about the project and are keen to get things moving and have work start on site as quickly as possible.”
Paul Ellenor, Regional Director – Yorkshire and the North East at Tilbury Douglas, said: “This project represents a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of the Halifax community. Our role is to ensure that the new centre is not only high-quality and accessible but also delivered with pace, precision and long-term value in mind. We bring proven expertise in complex, sustainable developments and are fully committed to driving this landmark scheme forward with Calderdale Council.”
Work is expected to begin on site later this year, following completion of the detailed design and early enabling works.
This project reinforces Tilbury Douglas’ expertise in delivering high-quality public sector infrastructure that meets strategic local priorities.
