Tilbury Douglas breaks ground on Mearns Castle High School Project

Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out business, has officially marked the start of construction on the Mearns Castle High School Project, which is being delivered on behalf of East Renfrewshire Council. The project will include the demolition, refurbishment and extension of the existing school in Newton Mearns.

The project will involve the demolition of 280sqm of original school building to the north and the design and construction of a 580sqm two storey extension within the footprint of existing demolished building.

Working with ECDA, Rybka and Narro, the new extension will include six classrooms, toilet facilities, admin offices, a lift and stair cores. The works will be carried out within a live school environment.

Recently, the Tilbury Douglas team, joined Headteacher Stuart Clark, along with a number of school pupils to break ground and officially mark the beginning of works on site. At the event, the team talked through what the progress of the project would look like, their plans for delivering social value and also took the opportunity to introduce the site team to teachers and pupils.

Barry O’Hagan, Regional Director – Scotland at Tilbury Douglas, commented: “We are proud to be delivering this facility for the teachers, pupils and parents of Mearns Castle High School. We will be working within a live school environment so communication and community benefit delivery will be integral to the success of the project.

“Our team is working closely with East Renfrewshire Council, the school’s DYW team and pupils to develop relationships which will allow us to create real opportunities for pupils within the school in terms of work experience, employability support and apprenticeships.

“From a business perspective, we are delighted to be delivering for East Renfrewshire Council, a new client for Tilbury Douglas, and see Mearns Castle as an opportunity to further expand on our ever-growing experience of delivering school projects.”
