Tilbury Douglas breaks ground on Newgate Street Health & Wellbeing Hub
Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out business, has officially marked the start of construction for the Newgate Street Health & Wellbeing Hub with a ground-breaking event attended by representatives from Tilbury Douglas, AnotherKind Architects, and Bassetlaw District Council.
The £8.5m development, procured through the Pagabo Framework, will transform a vacant site owned by Bassetlaw District Council into a modern, purpose-built health and wellbeing hub, which will be leased to the NHS to enhance healthcare provision for local residents. Construction is set to commence in March 2025, with completion scheduled for early 2026.
Designed by AnotherKind Architects, the new hub will be located adjacent to the Newgate Medical Practice and will provide state-of-the-art medical facilities, including 24 consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, and additional space for administration and support services. The project addresses the limitations of the existing medical centre, which faces accessibility and capacity challenges due to its outdated design.
As part of Tilbury Douglas’ commitment to social value, the project will create employment and training opportunities, including apprenticeships and work placements. A construction apprentice has already been placed on the project, and a year out placement is planned for the summer, ensuring long term benefits for the local economy and workforce.
Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity & Place at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “Appointing a main contractor is a significant milestone in the project to transform a long-term vacant site into a new Health & Wellbeing Hub and we are delighted to have Tilbury Douglas onboard. I look forward to work starting on site in March.”
Selina Dobbs, Practice and PCN Manager, commented on behalf of Newgate Medical Group GP Partnership: “We are delighted that this long-standing project has now come to fruition. We look forward to our continued involvement with this scheme and to continue providing our local community with high-quality Primary care.”
NHS Bassetlaw continues to collaborate closely with Bassetlaw District Council and Newgate Medical Group to support the development of the new hub. Once completed, it will significantly improve healthcare services in the region, ensuring that the local community has access to modern, high-quality primary care facilities.
The ground-breaking event marks the first step in delivering this essential project, reaffirming the commitment of all partners to enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Bassetlaw.
