Tilbury Douglas hosts steel signing ceremony at its St. Thomas C.E. Primary School project in Leigh
Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out business, hosted a steel signing event at its St. Thomas C.E. Primary School project, located in Leigh, on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE).
Staff and pupils of St Thomas, as well as representatives from Wigan Council, Atkins Realis and Tilbury Douglas, gathered to mark this project milestone and reflect on the progress made on site since the groundbreaking event which took place earlier this year.
The school is being rebuilt as part of the DfE’s School Rebuilding Programme and will replace the original school on Astley St, which is set to be demolished due to its poor condition and lack of energy efficiency. The original site will be restored to become a publicly accessible open space.
The new building, which is part single and part two-storey, will accommodate up to 420 pupils aged 4 – 11 and is designed by Ellis Williams Architects. A bio-solar roof, amongst other sustainable interventions, will ensure that the school is net-zero ready.
Kabir Salihi, Regional Director – North West at Tilbury Douglas, commented: “For the pupils and staff of St Thomas C.E. Primary School, signing the steelwork is a moment that will become part of the fabric of their new school. It’s a small but meaningful way to connect the school community with their new building as it takes shape. Tilbury Douglas is proud to be delivering a sustainable, future-ready school with the Department for Education that will provide a legacy for pupils, staff, and families in Leigh.”
