The existing school building was demolished and replaced with a specially designed two storey steel framed building to meet the needs of the pupils, incorporating SEN (special education needs) appropriate external spaces including a MUGA (multi use games area) pitch and various play areas.

The school building, (3027m²), is comprised of 22 classrooms, seven of which accommodate primary aged children (age 4 to 11) on the ground floor with 10 accommodating secondary aged (11 to 16 years) children on the first floor. There are five additional specialist classrooms.

Client

“I would like to convey our sincere thanks to the entire team for all you have done on the Austen Academy project.

Every aspect of the project has been has been of the highest order. All activities have been undertaken in a collaborative, unflappable ‘can do’ manner, which supports our shared project culture built upon mutual respect and anticipation.

It is quite remarkable how despite the COVID-19 pandemic you have delivered this project ‘right first time’ so thank you again and very well done to all who have contributed to making this such a successful project on so many levels.”

Nick Yarrow, Hampshire County Council

Challenges and solutions

The project was programmed for 66 weeks. The site team had a very good understanding of the programme and the critical path activities, which resulted in the project being delivered in 61 weeks. Good communication with the client allowed the building to be finished and handed over early.

As a direct result of the successful delivery of this scheme, Hampshire County Council direct awarded Tilbury Douglas a new 90 place SEN School in Farnborough, called Samuel Cody.
