Barkers Haugh is a major Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in the centre of Durham. To deliver this scheme successfully, whilst mitigating impact on local businesses, residents and tourists, we carefully considered delivery solutions around off-site build to deliver best value.
Works comprised:
- Extension of main incomer board & new feeder for the new MCC
- Bulk excavation works – Approx. 4200m3
- Secondary humus tanks to replace 2no humus tanks
- Tertiary humus tanks
- New MCC (Tertiary Treatment MCC)
- Washwater transfer pumping station & pump
- Final effluent sampling facility
- Increase pumping capacity of interstage Pumping Station No.2 & Pumping Station No.3
- Flow Distribution Chambers, effluent collection & automated humus de-sludging system for settlement tanks
- Humus sludge pumping station & transfer pumps
- Final effluent monitoring (MCERT)

The new MCC base has been constructed off line from the works, adjacent to the new settlement tanks. The base was excavated and formed in traditional FRC with all required ducts cast into the trench of the base.
