Tilbury Douglas was appointed under the P22 framework by Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to design and build a much needed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) unit at Bodmin Community Hospital.
The new building reflects the requirements for delivering care to support the needs of young people suffering with mental ill health, who previously had to receive their inpatient treatment out of the county. The new purpose-built, modern therapeutic unit provides inpatient mental health and psychiatric intensive care for children and young people in the 13-18 age category across Cornwall. The building also delivers day care and educational services to both day and residential service users.

The unit provides a total of 14 beds (two of which are for high dependency care) and associated inpatient accommodation, together with clinical space for inpatients and day patients to attend therapy services and to meet their educational needs. The total new area is 2045m² over two storeys.
The CAMHS unit is divided into five elements: the entrance area, small living clusters with bedrooms, shared living areas, education block and offices. There are a number of courtyards within the unit to allow for light and service users access to external space and fresh air.
The entrance is highly visible upon arrival. The reception, waiting area, café space and visitors’ areas are all located at the front of the unit and they are accessible to both service users and visitors.
Full height curtain walling creates a dynamic and active façade to enable a welcoming entrance into the building and help blur line boundaries between the inpatient facility and the community. Offices are located on the first floor away from service users and visitors areas and will only be accessed by staff.
