This school project was required to meet the rising demand for additional quality teaching facilities with a focus on outdoor learning.
The much-needed project consisted of demolition works followed by the construction of a new two storey junior school building. The works also included alterations to the existing school building and landscaping works to form new playground areas. We provided a new external amphitheatre and ramped access between the Junior and main school site. Parking was also provided.
The building provides new and improved facilities including:
- A modern, multi-purpose sports hall
- A spacious and contemporary library
- Six additional classrooms
- Large outdoor play areas
- An external amphitheatre for creative outdoor lessons and play
- A new Art and Design Technology room
- A bright atrium and exhibition space
- Meeting rooms and offices
- Medical room, kitchen, dining areas, stores and communal facilities
This project was procured through a competitive tender process. Tilbury Douglas was selected to deliver it based on our ability to provide the client with value for money while delivering an outstanding quality facility.

Ensuring minimal impact to the live school, tram service and public
The project took place within an extremely tight site in the middle of a live school within metres of operational classrooms.
Daily (sometimes hourly) liaison took place with the school Head Teacher and Head of Estates to ensure minimal impact. We re-phased the project to maximise the school holiday periods, accelerating the programme and reducing disruption to the day to day running of the school.
The school is accessible off Waverley Street Nottingham, which has a tramline running in both directions. We liaised closely with Nettrams and undertook track safety training and learnt what to do if we came into contact with a live tram. (There is a red button the tram providers can press to cut the power and stop all trams in Nottingham.)
Project specific inductions and Tool Box Talks were provided to our supply chain, covering working within close proximity to tram lines.
The site neighbours included the operational school student accommodation and some residential properties. We also registered this scheme with Considerate Contractors and provided the public with monthly newsletters notifying residents of the works.
Supporting the local community
A number of initiatives were incorporate to bring about meaningful social value on this project;
- Two of our in-house Technical Apprentices worked on this project
- Our Business Development Apprentice helped win this contract
- We provided site tours for nine groups of Nottingham Trent University Construction Management students (180 in total)
- We provided a four-week placement for a Nottingham Trent University student
- Two Scaffolding Trainees worked on this scheme
- The drylining, groundworks, demolition and glazing subcontractors were based in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
- Weathered coping was procured from a local supplier in Calverton, Nottingham
- Agency staff were sourced through a Nottingham-based company
- We donated redundant timber to Community Wood Recycling, a local social enterprise
- We held a presentation for the school to inform them about project progress and the dangers of playing on a construction site
Local nursery transformation
Give a day of your time is a Tilbury Douglas initiative, where all employees are encouraged to use two working days per year to benefit a social project. 18 colleagues comprising our team along with 13 people from HR (Head Office) transformed an outdoor play area into a combined learning and play zone for a local nursery. We also reused a redundant outdoor timber gazebo from Nottingham High School and transported it to the nursery. We provided a new canopy and roof decked area with sleepers, plant areas, astro turf and a sand pit. We sourced two free skips from our skip supplier Wards Recycling.
We were awarded a £2,500 grant for the project from Tilbury Douglas Engineering Services and contacted key suppliers, including Ward Recycling, to ask them to donate materials and resources.
James Balfour, financial director at Ward Recycling, said: “When Tilbury Douglas approached us to help on the project we were more than happy to assist. We always look to support local projects and hope we can work with them again on any other worthy projects that are undertaken. I am sure the children will be thrilled to see the new outdoor learning area. Hats off to Tilbury Douglas for their generosity and efforts to make this happen.”
