We worked closely with the professional team to unlock the full potential of the historic site, converting the former nurses quarters attached to Guy’s Hospital into a new cultural venue. In doing so we have transformed the building and external courtyard into a space where art and science can collide, capturing the imagination and inspiring young adults for years to come.

“King’s Science Gallery London represents a new vision for the role of the university in the 21st century. It will take critical new research on urgent issues beyond the university walls and bring them to life through science and art. Science Gallery London will see new collaborations between artists and scientists challenge the status quo and capture the imagination of King’s local communities, students across the capital and visitors young and old.”

Professor Edward Byrne, President & Principal of King’s College London

Basebuild challenges

One of the key challenges to the project were the issues created by the basebuild and enabling works (which were delivered by another party). These issues, including elements such as floor levelling and replacement of screed, needed addressing prior to commencement. We worked closely with the client-side consultant, Lendlease, to identify and rectify any problem areas, adapting our start date and overall programme.

The design scheme repositioned the entrance of the building and introduced contemporary architectural elements, such as an external goods lift tower cloaked with dynamically edge-lit lasered glass panels.

There were also a number of specialist materials/products to consider, some of which presented a risk to the programme. We worked collaboratively with the team to manage the longer than expected lead times and provided a flexible approach to adapt to the changing design.

In order to minimise the impact of these issues on the client we used sectional completions to hand over completed areas on a phase-by-phase basis. This provided early access to the client direct works teams, allowing them to complete their activities at the earliest opportunity.
