Tilbury Douglas constructed a new six-storey, 778 bay car park at Southampton General Hospital in order to provide much needed car parking spaces in a congested major city hospital site.
The new car parking provision improved the patient, visitor and staff experience and helped to meet the demand for on-site car parking. This project developed from a solid existing relationship with the hospital, having already successfully carried out several other projects at the hospital.

The new car park was constructed on an existing surface level car park on the Southampton General Hospital campus. The design of the car park is a tiered design which creates the illusion of the car park being set back from the nearby residential properties, reducing the visual impact of the structure.
The car park structure is clad in a timber brise soleil, metal grating and also has greewall features to soften the visual impact of the building.
The site is in a relatively small area, in close proximity to live hospital buildings. Every consideration was taken in order to reduce the impact of the construction works on the working hospital. This included carefully timed deliveries, with strict instructions as to the delivery route. Noisy works were kept to a minimum and were discussed beforehand with the hospital; acoustic barriers were used as well to help mitigate the noise levels.
Works were on programme and to budget.
