Southampton General is the largest of University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust’s establishments and has a great number of specialist services based there, ranging from neurosciences and oncology to pathology and cardiology.
The works consisted of two key elements: the new-build two-storey, high curved entrance building which houses a new reception, waiting areas and additional retail space and toilet facilities; and the re-modelling and refurbishment of the existing main thoroughfare included shell and core works to a number of retail units. This was a multi-phased approach to ensure that retailers could continue to trade through out the project and as such involves significant out of hours works.

Additional works included the re-modelling of the hospital’s pharmacy facility, cashiers’ space and areas of clinical and administration use. All works required us to undertake significant alterations and adaptions to a wide array of existing hospital infrastructure and services which required a high level of communication and careful planning with the hospital estates’ management team.
Works commenced on this sensitive project with the demolition of the existing main entrance to the hospital, prior to the full remodelling of the internal shopping centre.
Construction around hospital access routes was a major factor in the phasing and methods selected for installation of large structural elements. Closure of the entrance to undertake construction required the re-routing of over 10,000 pedestrian movements per day into the hospital. During the later stages of the project, these 10,000 movements were accommodated through the centre of our site enabling many of the new retail spaces to fully trade ahead of overall completion.
Due to the position of the hospital’s helipad, careful consideration was given to the use of a crane on site, with full approval sought from the Trust.
Key consideration for the success of the project is the control of noise and vibration and we have introduced a number of sound reducing measures to minimise the impact to the surrounding buildings, including the MRI and critical care units:
- Soundex panels are being utilised for acoustics, insulation and fire retardancy.
- We have upgraded the mechanical attachments to the demolition machine to reduce vibration and noise.
- In consultation with the design team and Trust, we have re-designed the foundations to incorporate existing ground obstructions, thus reducing the requirement to break out and remove.
The site team provide a 24 hour call centre which allows for any issues to be resolved swiftly and succinctly.
