The Old Bailey plant replacement

  • Location: London
  • Sector: Mechanical and electrical
  • Division: Engineering

In partnership with AECOM and HOK, our Engineering team was awarded the consortia bid as lead principle contractor for the Corporation of London, Old Bailey on a £35m Framework scheme spread over 10 years. Working for The Corporation of London, who owns the capital’s Central Criminal Court, we undertook the decade long refurbishment programme.

Key stats

The programme concentrated on upgrading old boiler rooms and building services throughout the 180-year-old building and involves replacing all current plant and chillers within the basement areas of the building. Additionally, Engineering Services replaced the steam boilers with new low pressure hot water boilers, installed new AHU’s, cooling towers and pumps, along with the installation of a new BMS system.

All work at the Old Bailey was staggered through five phases to allow the 18 criminal courts to continue to operate during the modernisation programme; with only two of the courts at one time being unusable. Most of the work took place at night to avoid disruption to live trials.

The initial phase was designed throughout 2014 and works began the following year; with phase two pre-construction planning beginning in 2016.

All works took place in a busy central London environment, which created a number of logistical hurdles the team had to overcome. These restrictions included three separate shifts of staff; and restrictions to when excessive noisy works cannot take place (between 10:00–13:00 and 14:00-18:00).

We were also asked to provide preventative maintenance, which was supported locally with a 24-hour reactive service provision.
