Client
The design of the pod was intended to reflect Southampton’s nautical heritage and it was fully assembled off site in Holland by a shipbuilding company. The main challenge was to manage the procurement sequence correctly, so that the steelwork structure of the pod could progress efficiently to ensure the four tubular steel legs measuring 5000m in diameter were in place in time for the arrival of the pod. The entire pod structure weighs 139 tonnes.
Added value
The site team worked closely with the University and local schools to deliver a comprehensive employment and skills plan to assist with education needs and requirements, for example assisting with the curriculum, delivering lectures and arranging site visits.
