This project provided modernised facilities to increase capacity and improve patient care within the Emergency Department at Warrington Hospital.

View gallery Key stats

The scheme included the construction of a two-storey extension of the Appleton Building, as well as the construction of a gable end on the building to form extended spaces for waiting, assessment and treatment rooms, new staff rooms and offices.

The ground floor of the 1,170sqm extension is exclusively for patient care and offers urgent ‘hot’ clinics, assessment areas, triage space, ambulatory care and primary care in the expanded and redesigned space.

The second floor is home to administration, equipment and staff rest areas which previously occupied valuable ground floor space in the existing emergency department. This space can now also be used for patients.

The expanded estate also increases capacity to deliver acute care for patients in extreme health emergencies. In addition to the new clinical and assessment space enabling a range of pathways to care, the extension will have a ‘high care’ area for patients presenting with high-risk respiratory and other serious symptoms.

Challenges and solutions

Innovative Multivista technology was used to demonstrate progress by allowing the client to walk around the construction site virtually with up-to-date, accurate 360 photos.

P22 repeatable rooms were incorporated on the ground floor. The standardisation delivered through modern methods of construction (MMC) helped to reduce costs and carbon and provide familiarity for the clinical staff and users.

“Tilbury Douglas understood the demands of the scheme and the benefits the project would deliver for patients. They worked hard in partnership with the Project Team, Trust Estates, and clinical teams to handover the scheme to programme.”

Lee Bushell, Head of Capital Projects

Added value

The fast track, nine-month programme using digital technologies, modern methods of construction and split shifting to accelerate delivery, allowed the Trust to open the new Emergency Care Centre to patients ahead of programme.

The project was delivered within budget, accident free and with a social value return on investment of £2.64m for the local community.

A Post Occupancy Evaluation scored 100% end user satisfaction.
