This project doubled the size of the existing Emergency Department to ensure Wythenshawe Hospital could continue to provide first class emergency treatment and care to patients, in quality surroundings that continued to meet increasing demands.

The works were completed in three phases:

Phase one new build – construction of a 2,195m² three-storey extension to the front of the existing, live Emergency Department (ED) to provide new triage, major and minor injury treatment areas, a new waiting area, reception and new dedicated emergency corridor with separate ambulance and ambulant entrance.

Phase two refurbishment – 1,501m² internal refurbishment to the existing department providing new resuscitation bays, paediatrics ED, X-ray rooms.

Phase three refurbishment – provided improved relatives’ facilities, GP offices, seminar rooms and upgraded staff facilities.

The works included the installation of a new plant room, new ambulance bays, turning area, canopy, SMART car parking bays, drop-off area, decontamination facility and hard landscaping.

Tilbury Douglas delivered this vital project within the confines of a live Emergency Department treating critically ill patients with demolition and refurbishment undertaken below the live operating theatres.

We completed the construction, services integration, isolations to the wider hospital and medical gases break-ins without impacting access for blue lights and the helipad.
