Yeovil District Hospital
Ambulant Breast Care Centre
-
Location: Yeovil
-
Sector: Health

Division: Regional Building
This is a traditional contract won through the Procure Partnership Framework, providing a two storey, steel frame, Ambulant Breast Care Unit (ABU) at Yeovil District Hospital.
The new unit relocated the current referral unit and brought services together, enabling patients to have their clinical examination, an ultrasound scan, a mammogram, a biopsy, a prosthesis fitting, along with doctor and specialist nurse appointments all in one place, thus improving the patient experience. The unit will see 1,200 patients per year and include:
- A dedicated counselling space
- A changing room, designed specifically to ensure patient privacy and dignity
- A fitting room for bras and prostheses
- A comfortable waiting area, away from other busy outpatient areas and treatment rooms
- Art and natural light to make the atmosphere as relaxing as possible
- A mammography room
- An ultrasound room
- A wellbeing room for support groups and wellbeing activities
An enabling package included tree protection (three trees) and removal, site clearance and service diversions. The slope of the existing site dictated that the building would have a larger first floor footprint than ground, with the main entrance being at first floor level. The new building was constructed on a combination of reinforced and mass fill concrete strip and pad foundations.

Challenges and solutions
The new unit is located on a very tight site and landlocked on the north and west with existing hospital buildings including the Women’s Hospital and the A30 on the south of the site. To the east is a pedestrian subway that was adapted to provide vehicle access to the construction site.
Vehicle movement onto site was through a one-way system and managed by our Gateman and Just in Time deliveries.
The site was close to other main contractors, and we shared our site facilities with Veolia who was providing a new substation adjacent to our site at the same time.
Daily liaison with other contractors on the hospital site resulted in minimal disruption to the hospital and other building works.
Social value
- Six members of our team along with family members took part in the International Cycle 42 to raise funds for the Yeovil Hospital Charity Breast Cancer Unit Appeal, as part of our give a day of your time (GADOYT) initiative. The team raised £1,470 which will go towards further dedicated units like this one designed specifically with cancer patients in mind.
- 62% of subcontractors used were based within 30 miles of site.
- The site team scored 41/45 for their first Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) visit.
- The site team included one full time apprentice and our subcontractors had apprentices in mechanical and electrical installation and brick laying.
- Yeovil College students will be visiting site prior to handover to gain experience in carpentry and bricklaying.
