Tilbury Douglas Named Winner of Two Awards at the Construction News Awards 2021
Tilbury Douglas won the ‘Editor’s Award for Leadership in the Pandemic’ and the ‘Contractor of the Year (Turnover under £500m) Award’ at the 2021 Construction News awards. The company was also highly commended once and a finalist in three other categories.
Tilbury Douglas was named the winner of the ‘Editor’s Award for Leadership in the Pandemic’ for its work on the Nightingale Hospital in Birmingham, in which more than 500 people put in 100,000 hours over 13 days to deliver the first 804-bed phase. The judges noted its scope and speed, as well as its quality, being the only Nightingale delivered to clinical grade rather than military field-hospital standards.
Lem Bingley, Construction News Awards Editor, commented: “Tilbury Douglas went beyond official guidance to try to protect everyone working on its sites, remembering to address mental as well as physical wellbeing. It adopted just about every procedure or technical innovation I’ve heard anyone recommend, to keep its people safe in the pandemic while still allowing them to earn a living. It thoroughly deserves recognition for all it has achieved.”
Nick Pollard, Tilbury Douglas Chairman, said: “This is public recognition of what a wonderful job the team did during COVID – well ahead of the rest of industry. Well done to everyone involved – absolutely superb and well deserved.”
Tilbury Douglas also won the ‘Contractor of the Year (Turnover under £500m) Award’ for its work in its Yorkshire and North East division. The award cited work at Mount Oswald in Durham, where modern methods of construction delivered £7m of cost savings, a 25-week programme reduction, zero defects and 22% less waste than a conventional project.
The judges said: “The impressive net-promoter scores achieved by Tilbury Douglas demonstrate the strength of client experiences and indicates the positive culture embedded in the workforce.”
Congratulations to everyone involved!
